The VanNess Vagabonds

It's not the destination but the journey . . .

Vagabonds Mega-Mini-Tat

Mark has been on a mini-tat kick for the past couple of months. I was watching him bang out some really cool small tattoos and thought it would be awesome to get a VanNess Vagabonds mini tat to represent our trip.

At first, we were thinking of something pretty simple, but after some coffee, cigarettes, and discussion we came up with an awesome idea with tons of cool meanings.

Because I have been dreaming of this for a long time and I love, love, love sugar skulls (why I make them out of metal) we decided on a sugar skulls with a globe for a head. We, or Mark rather, added a “V” to the top of the skull to symbolize the VanNess Vagabonds. The flowers that decorate the skulls are dogwood- the North Carolina state flower (where we were both born and raised). The decorative lines on the skull start at NC.

All that detail in a tiny little area- thats why its a mega mini tat!

A couple of Side Notes-
1. Mark never ever ever tattoos anybody without gloves! We are married and have been together for 6 years- this was the first time that he had ever tattooed anyone without gloves. He only did it because we are married and this tattoo was really meaningful to both of us and we thought it would be cool to go old school with it. I just wanted to put that out there in case anyone was wondering.
2. Mark did all of the script free hand with a single needle and I think I owe him some props for that. He is incredible. I am so proud of my new tattoo thanks to his amazing abilities.

  1. that is beautiful work! what a great story, too. an outdoorsy friend of mine said the other day, “scars are like tattoos but with better stories.” i told him he obviously didn’t have any tats.

  2. Ha, thats funny. I do see where your friend is coming from though. Every scar has a great story behind it, but usually tattoos do too.

  3. I want one! Is it too late for bro tattoos?

  4. Its never too late!

  5. FYI, I just nominated this for SoSauce’s upcoming Travel Tattoo feature.

  6. Thanks for thinking of us. What is SoSauce’s so we can check it out?
